JS Conf Hawaii

conference print materials and branding

In 2019 joined the JS Conf Hawaii team of organizers for the inaugural year of the conference. The conference was held at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort, where we hosted ~300 attendees for a single track 2-day event. My role as an organizer was to produce branded elements for the event. This work included: Logo, badges, stickers and other swag, signage, and more.

Branding

Our JS Conf Hawaii brand is a sub-brand of the existing JS brand. We wanted to infuse the modern JS brand with iconic 1970’s surfer vibes. We wanted our guests to get both “JS” and “Hawaii” in a single glance.

badges

The organizing committee defined our core values as: Community, Diversity, and Fun! Our badges are a great example of how we implemented these values.

In addition to the fun design, our badges included a request for pronouns that could be covered with our pronoun specific stickers that were provided at the event. Rather than providing a (default) lanyard, we hired a local lei company to provide ti leaf leis that were used as a lanyard for our badges. At the end of the event, we invited our guests to return their lanyards to the earth, rather than throw them in the trash. They were a hit.

Swag

We wanted to be really conscious about our swag, creating items we felt like our attendees would really WANT to keep and use.

We created a branded towel for their beach time, a shoe bag that could just as easily go to the beach as the ballroom, and surfboard speaker gifts that were a perfect addition for the office. Check out a few of the tweets below to see how our guests felt about these items.
