Hawaii COVID & Tourism App
pitch Prototype
This app serves to modernize the tourism paper trail to Hawaii. It centralizes the paperwork required to enter and continues to provide value by recommending curated activities based on your interests.
what do we need?
Traveling to Hawaii right now is more complicated than it has been since commercial airlines started flying here. There are no signs that they system that will get less complex. Our only hope is to make the process easier to understand, starting with potential travelers, bundled up next to their fires, asking themselves “Can I even go to Hawaii right now?” and “How?”. Have app, will travel.
This MVP focuses heavily on the “traveling” stage, but it also glances at “on island” stage, and dips a toe into “back home” stage. Positioned as the Official tourism app for the islands, this will grow to serve all stages of traveling to Hawaii.
feature: Required paperwork
Travelers to Hawaii must register their trip with the State via web app, submit Agriculture and Tourism via paper forms, show a QR code that’s an email…
We sought to reduce confusion, duplication, and general anxiety for these travelers by doing a few simple things:
Centralize forms into a single location. Where do I upload my quarantine exemption paperwork? Where to I find the health questionnaire?
Reduce number of form fields by eliminating duplication across forms and pulling data we already know. In this screenshot we can see that the flight information has been automatically pulled in using the flight number, reducing the number of user inputs from 3 to 1. We did the same thing with profile inputs, allowing a user to connect their Apple Profile. If we could find the information another way or fill multiple fields with one click, we did.
Provide a clear outline of steps, and a path through them. After each step, a user checks in with their progress and can choose to continue or take a break by selecting “Skip for now”
Centralizing these forms wasn’t without its downsides, however. Despite input reduction the app was still a wall of forms. One way we tried to help our users through this was by breaking up the form into smaller parts and add with periodic achievements.
Feature: Curated experiences
As the official travel app, we also want to be able to match our travelers with local small businesses that are tailored to their travel style. Based on their profile, we should be able to suggest a few curated activity lists. In order to deepen our ability to suggest the right activity, we also built a fun interactive “hot or not” style rating system that calculates the travelers interest based on enjoyment and cost. Based on their answers we can make more accurate suggestions, and even match them with community evens like hiking and pa’u hana (happy hour).
